illustration friday

illustration friday

this weeks topic is city.

the topic for me was a scary thought. part of me wanted just to start the task next week. as iv explained in my authors blog post. i can not draw city scape what so ever, the proportions and conecpts are all wrong. with practice i know i could be able to draw citys..iv got the skills and know how just not the motivation and intrests to drawing a bunch of bricks.

This is going to be either a good excercise for me to practice drawing city's or a good chance for me to take a brief and to twist it to answer the brief correctly but to suit my ability.

To do list.

Research inspiration - 1 hour
Thumbnails              -  1 hour
Roughs.                   - 30 mins
Page work.              - 2 hours
Digital                      - 2 hours

First step is thumbnails. And playing around with composotion that will be forgiving my low level of drawing city skills.

Lower left. Hides most the land scape but still looks interesting and says city.
I like the birds been the focus of the page...birds are in city's. When I think of city I think of trafic business,

the above two i couldnt make the image work larger. the thumb nail worked buut making a quick rough of how it ould look on a full page just wouldnt work.

below i started to draw the thumbnail for the third time. when doing this i got a little distracted and drew a bird facing the two birds at the bottom, i was going to give them all speech bubbles sying somthing that i thought would be funny to show our lass for her not to laugh at...im glad i did. this gave me a new image in mind. pigeons are all over the city and citys are crwoded so i quickly drew someone walking around the bird.
i had the idea of a pigeon stood shocked in the middle of a busy foot way or somthing.

these real quick thumbnails alowed me to find the right posistion for the bird and the peopels legs.
i didnt want too many legs to take away the atraction of the bird. i also didnt want any of the poeples legs in front or behind the bird this could have made the bird lost in the image. placment was a huge importance for this to work.

after a few thumbnails i knew i had got the lay out i was after.

Some reference I used to help understand some elements of my city picture

pencil and inking up the page

using some skills i learned last year. line of sight. i used this to help the eyes of the veiwer be gaided to the pigeon. the umbrella points to the bird. the lower left shoe pints to the bird. the bag strap points to he bird slightly. i aslo made a fram for the bird using the crowds body parts. i feel this helps highlights the pigeon witch again makes him the main atraction.

final digital piece.

I gave the hole image a boarder and shrunk it to a slightly smaller A4 size piece of paper. Think it makes it look more visually pleasing and more professional for some reason. Not saying everything needs a boarder to be pro but in this case it makes it loo better.

Iv not been doing digital long now. I started in September practicing it, I feel Iv come along way from the grandad I front of a screen to someone who now says this will look good when I put this through photoshop.

I always print out what Iv created digitally. I have this need to be able to hold a price of work in my hand makes it more real to me and plus you can notice more when it's been printed.
