Sketchbook development.

After the workshop with Fred with storyboards and the workshops with after effects I feel motivated to start experiment and playing with what iv learnt to get the ball rolling on the sting project with in the brief.

I feel comfortable with what iv learnt with in the digital side of things. Because of my past experience with digital work shops I think it's best I start to play around with what iv just learnt whilst it's still fresh in my head and that I'm motivated and comfortable to work with the program after effect.

I started by experimenting with some back ground ideas in my sketch. Using turps and wet and dry ink to see if I could get a polluted air effect

I did expect the effects to be more drastic, I wanted more separation and a more chemical effect. The best result I got what when I applied the turps onto wet grey wash. But I think this was a failed experiment that cost me 3 quid spouse i can use it to clean my paint brushes at some point.

Iv done around 6 story boards for the sting and iv fallen for one, and decided to experiment and push that one forward. It's going to be rather difficult but I feel I can tackle it after the skills iv learnt on after effect.

The scene will start with a tree scape with a old car sat there and the shot will pan across the tree and come across a character or characters in the centre frame it will continue to pan across this image until the frame end up to a car in front of a city scape. The angle will be looking from the tier of the car like iv documented in my sketch book.

Above. I drew this wide angle shot to show my layer and how the screen will pan across left to right. And then decide to find the things that I wanted to move in the frames. In my story boards I have wether elemets and clothing moving. Out of the two the cloths blowing in the wind will be difficult so I had to use my nogging to try and work this out. I could have Made a short give of the hair moving and uploaded that but I want this to be super simple but effective. Mcarthy books to me are very simple and easy to ready but there super effective they get to your emotions so this is what I aim for. I decided to do multiple layers of hair that I can make rotate up and down at diffent times to show the motion of movement. I will do the same with the clothing. I say all this now but I bet I'm swearing and growing when it comes to it.

To make this easier for my self I drew out the layers that will need to create so I could look at it as a broken down.

•panel 1 - a still image of the back ground and everything that will not move.
•panel 2 - weather one that will blow across the frames threw out the sting
•panel 3 - weather two that will blow across the frames at a angle threw out the sting
•panel 4 - weather three will be thicker to express depth.
•panel 5 - rubbish and debris blowing acros frames
•panel 6 - hair and clothing blowing in the wind

If I creat all these layers separate I can then ancer them to the point I want them and use after effect to animate them to move.

Even though this idea ( to me ) is ideal for what I'm trying to say about mcarthys books I don't think it will be very well excicuted unless the character or characers are right and the composition of them are done well. The angle and everything needs to express movement, struggle, passion, lonleyness possession  and survival. Because I think these are the main elemets that stand out in all of mcarthys work and I need to get that across. With all that in mind I started to experiment with characters

Whilst drawing these I was still playing around with the sting in my head so there's a few notes about the panning fright to left of the frames for my sting. Iv even made notes that when the man comes into fram the snow should get heavier.

Even though I'm no were near to be even thinking about sound I couldn't help getting into this drawing and drawing some roughs and listening to some dramatic theme tunes and trying to get inspired by some tune that will go well with my sting. I had Star Wars on across the stars and I Hurd a huge deep base and a long slow string sound that would introduce my character surviving in my frame so well so I ronpte down the base on my page so when I come to creating the music I can be reminded.

Iv been drawing a man holding a bag to represent possession and something that belongs to him because again through out mcarthys work there is always a relationship between someone and something be it a person or money or even a teddy. So just like the book the road I stuck in the boy in this scene to see how it would look and if it would be a good idea to push forward.

Some quick thumbnails I drew and experiments with movement I really need the position of the characters to feel like there stuck but trying to move forward (survive)

I even made some notes of key words that I'm trying to express like a tick box just to make sure iv got some elements in and see witch one is most expressive.

• love the man on his own its shows lonleyness and the thing that iv been documenting in  the past 2 sketch books. But there's somthing really pleasing seeing the man and the boy. Is it be issue I'm been pulled by my love for the film or is it just more moving. Will this image just make the hole thing look like a sting made for the film or will it help me express the elemets of mcarthy and the elements of his work?

Notes from sketch book.

I did a couple of pages of notes in my sketch. I made notes for my frame work and the music and sounds. I thought it would brim portent to document this on my blog due to it been a important thing I did in my sketch book because it helps me manage my self and not get lost and confused in my ideas and work load.

Over the summer I focused my studies on trees and wood lands. One of my strong points is realism and capturing photo quality images using a pencil and a paint brush. Because iv moved away from that style and I'm of using on a more comic style but wanting to bring some of them quilts along with it, I needed to practice with a pen and ink. And to me the hardest thing to draw is bark, woodland and trees. So that's why I went mad and drew a lot of trees for practice. I'm having a tree scape back ground through out my sting and I feel that drawing them like I did in the summer will be ideal for the style I'm going for and they have the right feeling I'm trying to get across.

Here are a few of the images I'm going to work from to Create a 8 ft long woodland image that I can my frames can pan across for 15 seconds. I don't want my sting to look like a scooby boo hallway scene.

Getting all excited image a 8 ft long roll of trees drawn like this :D drawing that will be a good day! Should take me approx 8 hours

A few refined images for practice for the sting. I'm happy with the look and the lay out and how I see it working in my head but I think the heavy lines around the objects come across too strong. The next lot of drawings I'm going to try fine liners and not brush pens for this. I don't think the brush pen fits the movement I'm going for. It makes it look heavy in places and more grounded.

• another sting idea.

Looking back at this sting I don't know if it will work very well. Can't help but think it's a little safe having the frame pan right to left with 5 elements of movement with in it. I'm not saying I'm not going to do it but I'm going to create a few more ideas and then wither play around with the new idea or play with this one.

Real rough quick sketch of a floating page :/.

I thought about having a floating page. A story board like a comic and it zoomed into the first panel and pans across telling the story or showing the images as sequential. And in the frames I can have things moving and text can move across from frame to frame. Will have to make a story board of the idea when I make some more detailed idea for the images with in the panels of the page.
