sketch book development
i feel im at the stage to start to consider the possibilities for my final submission. after my workshop classes i decided that screen print and lino are not the way for me to go. yeah i feel that screen print was a success but i feel that my printing abilities arnt good enough just yet and aslo i dont think it fits the voice or the character of my sketch book work. i had a chat with ben about my work and he gave me some super affective advice about the work and also my personal practice (see ppp blog titled - tutorial with ben) he looked though my sketch book and told me my style is strongly comic book based and that my zine was successful, the work, the style, the lay out...he said to consider publication maybe a story board book. because im focusing my practice to the audience of comic book i agreed with him and was inspired to create a short 12 page comic book publication based on my author. i think with the body of work and a little bit of research into story telling i will create a successful comic.
after deciding to create the comic i felt i needed to go back and recap through my sketchbooks find egsacly what it is iv been focusing on based on the authors work. through out my sketch books i focus on 3 things.
1. location - mcarthy uses the the locaions just as much as he uses the characters to make the story. i loved reading the deep discriptions of the locations.
2. survival - through out his work mcarthys characters always come to some kind of survival situation. even if its just for a short amount of time there is some struggle somewere, e.g stranded on a long road with out water or in a desert. hiding in hotel rooms with the lights out, hiding from hitmen..all survival.
3. posestion - every character has some kind of pesetion the man in the road had his son and a gun with one bullet or a possestion that kept them going like in country for old men the hit man kept hunting for the money.
i became fasinated with the road and the discription through out the book of survival, lonelyness ,postpociliptic. the body of work iv produced is heavily based on that. i think my next stage would be to try and addapt these three things from the books and addapt them into the sketchbook drawings if that makes any sense.
plan of action
create a few ideas for a story
refine story idea to detail.
create a few story boards to fit the story
create a few ideas for a character/location
create composition and page lay outs. make the story fir with in the recomended pages
create pages
colour each page in photo shop
create book in indesign
print out the book.
story idea number 1.
man appears to be running from somthing - focused on feet and movement
whilst running the man hits his head bad. starts to black out
someone shouts his name and he gets up and starts to run again.
runs a safe distance away. sees a van turns behind him to make sure hes not seen
enters the van. tiesthe van doors shut from the inside to prevent been got.
lays out his ragged blanket and lays don ready to sleep.
pulls out a family photo.
wakes and exits the van walks a good distance and sees a sign saysing safe house servivers welcome..the rig
walks more and comes to the coast see the rig.
takes a wooden boat across the stormy seas.
makes it to the rig climbs aboard and is welcomed by his family.
son screams when he aprrouches his dad.
the man wakes up back at the place were he hit his head.
sory idea number 2.
man wakes form his cam getting ready for a food run.
walks into to city looking for food
finds a tin of beans excited!
also finds a battery runs back with both items to his camp.
he makes his way to the tallest building in the city.
puts his battery in a walky talky.
negitive noise
he waits - difffenert scenes to show time passing and different weather.
- sat in the rain
- wind
- rain again
- snow
the last scene is of the man dead gripping the walky talky....the silence is broken by a voice on the walky talky saying. is there any one there?
story idea number 3.
man at his camp, walkes into the city for food.
finds something to eat . on his way back to camp finds a battery.
late in the evening ( dark by a fire )whilst eating his meal he puts the battery in a old walky talky.
negative sound begins to pore out of it.
excited man jumping around falling down a stumbling over possession.
he collects his things and heads back to the city in the darkness to the tallest point in the city.
he sits and waits time passes and his new camp is set up on top of the building
- different scenes to show time passing and different weather.
- sat in the rain
- wind holding on to belongings
- rain again sheled
- snow curled up trying to keep warm
then hes laid dead and the walky talky begings to speak.
story idea number 4.
a man walking through a postpocoliptic world. walking for miles in a storm
the man turns around to see somthing following him the man sees his camp not minuets aways
makes a run to the camp that is a van. the man struggles to tie the door shut but eventually locks it safe. the man lays down to sleep puts his gun beside him and rests.
the morning comes and he exits the van takes a walk into the city for food he finds a tin of beans.
on his way back to the camp he finds a battery.
late in the evening whilst eating his meal
he puts the battery in a old walky talky.
negative sound begings to pore out of it.
excited man jumping around falling down a stumbling over possession.
he collects his things and heads back to the city in the darkness to the tallest point in the city.
he sits and waits time passes and his new camp is set up on top of the building
- different scenes to show time passing and different weather.
- sat in the rain
- wind holding on to belongings
- rain again shelled
- snow curled up trying to keep warm
the man with no hope ill and depressed pulls out the gun places it in his mouth
before his pulls the trigger the walky talky speaks.
story number 4 i like the most i could keep going and altering the stories endlessly because each time i right it a new idea comes to my head but i need to stop and crack on with actually producing some physical work. i think the story has all the elements that i have focused my studies on and does show a lot of mcarthys work in it. maybe a nod to the head of his work.
just to refine the story and then i can start drawing this S.O.B
