i listened to the tracks and i chose the ones that i felt inspired by.
i listened to the lyrics of each track over and over and like a directer i was setting the scenes in my imagination. trying to use the lyrics as a guid to composition. the images i had in mind was far to complext. i then used the feel of the song for another approuch of inspiration ...was it sad? was it happy? i tried to use that as my motive to create, but the images i had in mind wasnt illustration ..pretty patterns is NOT illustrations to me.
after racking my brain for 4 days listening to the tracks i felt defeted and no longer wanted to do this competition as one of my shorter responsive tasks.
i gave it one more go but this time i started to ask my self questions about the music. whilst drawing the answers down...questions such as.
were would i be if i heard this music?
who would i be with?
were am i? what am i wearing?
what can i see?
am i drinking? am i eating?
all these question helped me on my way to my final sketches.
the songs i chosen are...
max richter - dream 3
jack garrett - worry
john Lennon imagine

above are doodles for the song worry. i set the scene in bellgrave because i felt thats were i would be if i wanted to listen to a song like this. i asked my self what would i be doing there. stood watching the band with a drink....they serve drinks in stupid jam jars!!!! that was it i set the scene. so i jotted down lots of roughs on one page i then started to make thumb nails around that to help me find the best frame. i drew a jam jar drink on a wooden counter. there i felt happy with a cover. thinking in front of what i cant do for the other covers i realised i could use the appropriate drink with the appropriate scene...i started do make a few thumbnails ( as you can see in the top part of the page ) and i drew a tux holding a glass of wine for the dreamer 3 track.
i found a theme that i could use through out my covers. finding the appropriate clothing and appropriate drink for the songs.
were would i be?
what would i be drinking?
are the 2 questions that i ask my self to create the covers for these tracks.
more roughs and questions working out the right composition for each track cover
below - the music seemed more up beat and i felt like i should be at a club or a festival to get that feel i used movement in my picture. i wanted to get across that the character was jumping.
below is the imagine thumbnails. i had trouble finding a drink that i could associate with the song for the time period, i found no help from the net either. having the hippy holding a flower felt more fitting for the song and i felt it was a nice little tweak to my themes. i was questioning what type of flower. at first i drew the flower in a pot to help me draw the hands better, if most of the hand was covered then it was less time drawing... i was looking for all kinds of short cuts at this point. main reason was i had other work to do as well as this and had little time to do it in.
i drew the flower in the hand to test how it would compare and right away it looked more pleasing to look at. it fit better with the rest of the covers. below you'll also see i drew a peace lili but i knew my digital skills was nowhere near the level i needed o be to be able to pull of a flower like that, i would have struggled translating the colours across form life to digital and i would have made the image look flat and crap. translating subtle colour changes is something i'm working on in my personal practise
happpy with frames i had chosen i know can go on to creating the finals. i had decided to ink the drawings first and then digitally colour them all.
max richter - dream 3
to draw the above i used references from the internet.
digitally coloured. happy with the result this one. theres a few floors for sure. like the anatomy of that glass. im also pleased that after every digital picture i make im only left with a question this to me means iv progressed and learnt something new. the question i am left with is that how could i make that shirt look more like a shirt by using textures or a colour.
jack garrett - worry
i drew the checked shirt in red ink to help me when i was digitally painting this. if i layered this with a multipul layer and when over it with a green the red would then become darker. if i had drawn it black i wouldn't be able to change the colour digitally.
again to help with the anatomy for this image i used a reference. i took a photo of a my house mate holding a pot of jam. blog shout out to nanas jam!!! theres no way you can draw a hand holding something with out it looking wooden or still born not unless you use real life reference. the hand looks almost spider like and skeleton like, when people havent used reference thins is when the hand looks wooden or flat.
earlier this semester i was drawing animals as a warm up before i drew for my college projects i can across a way to draw fur in a cool style i used my old drawing as reference to capture the same for the beard
really happy with teh out come on this, love the textures in the jacket and face rug! only thing i would change would that i would make the liquid in the drink more recognisable and not a solid black.

im happy with the textures on the shirt but the bottle is out of wack. this image dosnt just seem as satisfying as the rest yjis was the last of the four i created so maybe i was running out of steam and started to feel fed up. i remember not having time to be able to take a brake from this and come back to it with a fesh pair of eye and rested hands

I Olmsted the lower part o the hand on this picture because it wouldn't sit right with my composition. Made the image look strange for some reason couldn't explaine it...but made it look crap.
i feel the flower makes this the weakest of the cover. but still ver happy with the result. im fond of the stripes running through the gown that makes it look creased and waved. the flower i tried loads of times to get the right colours. finding colours that i could get away with.
as a short handled brief iv enjoyed this one. i enjoyed the fast decision making i had to make due to time management. iv enjoyed the challenge of making the images a set keeping the composition true through all 4 covers. if i knew i was to enjoy it as much as i had i would have made this my substantial brief and made 7 covers all working as a set same as these 4. i would have time tabled more time to create thumbnails and processes to find the best frame for each.
making my images work as a set is something i will use i'm my practise more. i feel that my research and practise in digital the past few months has helped me create these covers well. ill further my research and practice to help my digital skills grow. using layered texture with colour has given me the boost to learn more tricks in the digital world. over al happy with the covers and i'm glad i made the desiccation to take part in the secret 7.
