city post cards

ideas for the postcards

i brain stormed a few ideas but i was drawn to the idea of creating postcards of citys with links of famous people on them.finding famous icons to each city.

london- the royal family
hollywood- movie stars
florance- artists of history

i wanted to approach this task with a different mind set as before. i wanted to put a side ego and try something different. i played with the idea of creating characters for the famous icons and adapting them with something based on the city. a famous face on the statue of liberty would have been a good idea.

i went back to pencil and experimented characterising some of my icons. to see if i could draw in this style and if it could be pushed forward enough to develop into a acceptable hand in.

i started of by drawing a terrible rough sketch of the queen, to under stand her facial features.
for me to produce a character of the queen i think the best way is to take the image on a journey and remove information and exaggerate lines and tone.

again i removed information and exaggerated line work. some test work also on hands noses ears and lips.

maybe pushed too far, not recognisable any more. just looks like a posh evening dressed goer.

i did some work on the side of this project to help me understand illustrator better and try to get some level of skill on it.

i took photos from the net and uploaded them to illustrator and traced over the images. i knew that i wouldn't be tracing for my final piece but i felt it would be a good way to practise.

understanding layers and knowing what to have highlighted was the biggest challenge with this task. i had to have someone over my shoulder yet again to help me through the this easy yet annoying practise. (blog shout out to georgie)

final image. not what i had in mind but I'm happy that iv created something on illustrator.

after finishing these little projects i feel that i can produce good quality post cards using illustrator. as long as i do the same things as i have hear, drawing everything and then scanning the images in and tracing my own work.

i study a little more into cites around the world and iconic symbles around the world.
i found inspired by the statue of liberty. even though i knew this was a little easy i knew that i could give it a twist.

i did more research into american history and found that pin up art was very big in america the 1940s

This was my ruff up for the pin up of Statue of Liberty. I drew this on 3 layers of tracing paper the first was design and placement. The secon was form.

The third was going over the layers and making true lines and bringing the creation to a final. This way I could see more clearly why I was working with in illustrator...any thing to make it easier for me to use.

A progress shot in illustrator. At this rage I was on my second day of working on this. I struggled to get used to the program. I had no idea what I was doing. Every line I made I had to shout a class mate to try to explained to me why the was a solid huge shape across my screen. Couldn't get used to it at all.

The final image.

I'm happy with the out come due to the fact that I finishe a piece using illustrator. How ever there would have been more I would liked to have done such as the back ground more tonal values. I feel that if this had depth it would have worked much better. Seems too flat.

This image took me 6 days to finish! This was a frustration. I love illustrator...

My second postcard is inspired by the famous statue lady Russia. A statue that is in Moscow

I used the method as I did before. Layering the image, deviding it by design, form and final image. This seemed to work well for me on the Statue of Liberty piece, it made it much easier for me to see what I was working with when on illustrator.

Final image before illustrator

Again I'm happy with this one due to the fact iv finished another piece in illustrator

Still think the image is flat and lacks everything that would make it better but my ability a can't carry out what I want to do. I thought it would be easier the second time around but this took me another 6 days to do!

I'm so disappointed that i didn't get the time to finish all four post cards, I didn't have enough time to finish them. I would need for weeks to finish all three. Even though I didn't enjoy this project because of illustrator I still think it's a good program to have and to learn more about iv seen many people's work I have liked in my class, given me the inspiration to get better.
