evaluation

Which practical skills and methodologies have you developed within this module and how effectively do you think you are employing them within your own practice?

screen printing was a new skill to me that i will consider to use in my own practice with in the future. studying line and tone was a huge impact on my personal practise iv used line work with in my drawing before but not to the extent to create a full image using it, iv always aloud block shades and shapes to develop my images. now i have added line work to my practice i feel that the images are more successful and more visually pleasing.

Which principles/ theories of image making have you found most valuable during this module and how effectively do you think you are employing these within your own practice

learning about frames compostion and line of sight has been the most beneficial thing we have studied through out the year. this has made me look at my own work in a different light made me look back on my successful drawing i have created in the past and seen room for massive improvements. i feel having learned this i am adapting these methods in my sketch books well to get me to a more pleasing final image.

What strengths can you identify within your Visual Language submission you capitalise on these?

the strengths i can i identify are using frame and composition, on each feed group feed back the positive comments was always how well i have created composition.

What areas for development can you identify within your Visual Language submission and how will you address these in the future?

there are many things i need to develop on. such as practise colour, been more free with a media and even just loosening up with my drawing styles. but the mane thing i will concentrate on developing is been open minded to new styles of drawing. not all my drawings need to be observationally correct. i will practice ben less presses with my work

In what way has this module informed how you deconstruct and analyse artwork (whether your own or that of contemporary practitioners)?

with all the things i have studied and learnt on this project i can look at any work and comfortably comment on positive and negative elements of the piece. i feel thing gives me a voice! confident in knowing what i have learnt well i understand art and illustration better.

city post cards

ideas for the postcards

i brain stormed a few ideas but i was drawn to the idea of creating postcards of citys with links of famous people on them.finding famous icons to each city.

london- the royal family
hollywood- movie stars
florance- artists of history

i wanted to approach this task with a different mind set as before. i wanted to put a side ego and try something different. i played with the idea of creating characters for the famous icons and adapting them with something based on the city. a famous face on the statue of liberty would have been a good idea.

i went back to pencil and experimented characterising some of my icons. to see if i could draw in this style and if it could be pushed forward enough to develop into a acceptable hand in.

i started of by drawing a terrible rough sketch of the queen, to under stand her facial features.
for me to produce a character of the queen i think the best way is to take the image on a journey and remove information and exaggerate lines and tone.

again i removed information and exaggerated line work. some test work also on hands noses ears and lips.

maybe pushed too far, not recognisable any more. just looks like a posh evening dressed goer.

sketch book work thumb nails

i did some work on the side of this project to help me understand illustrator better and try to get some level of skill on it.

i took photos from the net and uploaded them to illustrator and traced over the images. i knew that i wouldn't be tracing for my final piece but i felt it would be a good way to practise.

understanding layers and knowing what to have highlighted was the biggest challenge with this task. i had to have someone over my shoulder yet again to help me through the this easy yet annoying practise. (blog shout out to georgie)

final image. not what i had in mind but I'm happy that iv created something on illustrator.

after finishing these little projects i feel that i can produce good quality post cards using illustrator. as long as i do the same things as i have hear, drawing everything and then scanning the images in and tracing my own work.

i study a little more into cites around the world and iconic symbles around the world.
i found inspired by the statue of liberty. even though i knew this was a little easy i knew that i could give it a twist.

i did more research into american history and found that pin up art was very big in america the 1940s

This was my ruff up for the pin up of Statue of Liberty. I drew this on 3 layers of tracing paper the first was design and placement. The secon was form.

The third was going over the layers and making true lines and bringing the creation to a final. This way I could see more clearly why I was working with in illustrator...any thing to make it easier for me to use.

A progress shot in illustrator. At this rage I was on my second day of working on this. I struggled to get used to the program. I had no idea what I was doing. Every line I made I had to shout a class mate to try to explained to me why the was a solid huge shape across my screen. Couldn't get used to it at all.

The final image.

I'm happy with the out come due to the fact that I finishe a piece using illustrator. How ever there would have been more I would liked to have done such as the back ground more tonal values. I feel that if this had depth it would have worked much better. Seems too flat.

This image took me 6 days to finish! This was a frustration. I love illustrator...

My second postcard is inspired by the famous statue lady Russia. A statue that is in Moscow

I used the method as I did before. Layering the image, deviding it by design, form and final image. This seemed to work well for me on the Statue of Liberty piece, it made it much easier for me to see what I was working with when on illustrator.

Final image before illustrator

Again I'm happy with this one due to the fact iv finished another piece in illustrator

Still think the image is flat and lacks everything that would make it better but my ability a can't carry out what I want to do. I thought it would be easier the second time around but this took me another 6 days to do!

I'm so disappointed that i didn't get the time to finish all four post cards, I didn't have enough time to finish them. I would need for weeks to finish all three. Even though I didn't enjoy this project because of illustrator I still think it's a good program to have and to learn more about iv seen many people's work I have liked in my class, given me the inspiration to get better.

personal drawing task

even though we are drawing and creating images almost every hour of the day its still important to me to keep up to scratch with my drawing abilities. to me drawing is like a muscle that needs to be warmed up and stretched, iv been making lots of thumb nails, roughs and digital work lately and i can tell that my i ned to warm up on observational drawing or warm that muscle up to keep my eye keen and sharp and not to get lost it quick and satisfied with drawing task been quick. even though drawing quick is a god tool for my practise its super important that i keep my observational drawing tight and clean

observational drawing is a strong point of mine and lately i have noticed that i find it difficult to draw creases with in fabric, and other textures so i set my self a evening task to draw as many screwed up pieces of paper i could before feeling i had done enough.

as you can tell the screwed up paper drawings are not strong drawings at all there not close to the level of any other of my observational drawings. i don't believe in if you can't draw something then you don't  i feel if you can't draw something study it and draw it until you can, not drawing something because you can't draw it or because it makes your work look weak isn't that best approach i feel you should draw it until you can and make that drawing you didn't draw before because you couldn't draw it.  learn how to draw the things you can't and your practise becomes stronger, that leads to better drawing skills and to better illustrations.
next evening task i will study the screwed up paper again but work in ink, and the time after that i aill use another media and keep going till i feel comfortable that i can draw these from my head.

line of sight

line of sight

what is line of sight?

line of sight is what draws your eye to the point that the artists is wanting you to look at at (at the main discustion of the picture) also leads you through the picture, tells the story

what does line of sight do for composition?

guides you through the story of the image, lets you see other elements of the picture.

how does movement relate to line of sight?

line of sight can suggest movement and speed, used correctly line of sight can control the speed of witch your eye travels through the image.

what relationship does the frame have with line of sight?

the right frame and right line of sight can work well together to suggest and show expression.

how does the hand out recommend that you use line to its full potential?

recognising the tools that create line of sight such as points and gaze and sales that run through the image that lead to the image that you are wanting to be the focus on.

sketch book image of the task.

drawing thumb nails of other artists work and drawing in the line of sight helped me understand line of sight a useful task that i feel should be done every now and then to keep your eye keen.

ZED-FLOW a useful talk in our class.

when you read text you see it left to right. there is the same principle when looking at an image, we look at an image as shown below. this is called zed-flow

task- to create a image with line of sight the topic is transport.
-strong line of sight
-compositsion
-depth and frame
-any format
-black and white with one colour

finished result of line of sight piece

the line of sight travels from the shrub in the foreground that travels through the path to the tree in the mid ground with follows the brigade to the train. in that i have made some of the plants point in that direction for you to follow the journey and some of the plants and branches point directly to the train.
i drew the brigade in hb and the trees in a 2b and then drew the shrub in the for ground in 4b and 6b to give the illusion of depth. i feel the shades of the pencil help the flow of the line of sight.

illustrator tutorial

illustrator tutorial

i don't want to come across negative or unprofessional in this post, but I'm explaining how i completed the task with my lack of skill. i won't lie to my self and say iv done this that and the other to complete this task.

as expected i knew i would find this difficult due to my lack of skill on computers. i find it difficult to take in and follow easy instructions when it comes to computer skills, still confesses me why i can't do it or even understand it. the same thing happens when i read a book i can read a page and it dosnt compute in my head i forget what iv just read seconds ago, this isn't an excuse but I'm sure its all to do with my dyslexia, either that or I'm just thick as! its frustrating that i can't take anything in when it comes to digital work.

we was told step by step how to use the pencil tool, even with a step by step tutorial i had shapes and lines all over my page.

pretty aint it! even with a one to one on how to use the tool with the tutor was useless. not because of the teachings just because i couldn't take keep the basic interaction in my head.

we was given a task to trace over shapes using the pencil tool that we had just been told about

i completed the task but not as i was meant to i would like to say that i completed the task because i learnt how to use the illustrator tool but i can't. i did what i do best and improvised. i completed the task by using the pencil tool still but by multiple clicking and removing lines till the image looked as if it was traced. not cheating but completing the task with the skills i have.

i actuily followed the instructions on this one that i was surprised that i completed one of the tasks by following the instructions. i took this screen shot and tried to do it again but i failed. i failed

the second task we was given was to trace a character. again i attempted the task whilst be given a step by step walk threw on the task but failed.

a one to one with the tutor again helped me finish the task how ever i still don't know what i did to do it i think i finished the task by following his instruction by him telling me were to click…i couldn't redo any of this task again on my own

i feel that i should treat this program as i did with photoshop, take a step back and see what tool I can relate to. does it have a paint brush and a pallet? yes!

composition and working in frame

.composition and working in frame

- elephant
- butterfy
- me

our task was to explore frame with composition. whilst working with a frame i learnt that using a frame right is just as important as showing the level of craft in your work. the frame can be just as expressive as any other media. the right frame with the right subject can create the mood and give real character to the piece. working with in frame gives you the understanding of the area you have to work with in, if you have the mood and expression in mind that you want to bring across in your piece, you can experiment with that in making roughs of different frames and composition. getting the right frame for your expression.

to get the best results for  the picture i created a story. the story was me walking down a jungle path and coming across a elephant and a butterfly, the challenge was how can the two relate. i made it up that the two was playing. and i would be in the distance watching.
the next challange was what would the best composition be to show that story, and what frame would work with the composition and story.

i drew the elephant from my head, it wasn't too long ago that i did a day studying and drawing elephants so it was still fresh in my mind. i drew this elephant with a playful dog in mind, i wanted that expression that a dog does when there playing with something new in the yard.

i enjoyed working in ink and washes you can create a nice tone and textures that express detail and depth.
