About the author

At the beginning of the summer project i gave all authors a quick google search. i wasnt very inspired by any of them, i researched further into the authers and i only found one that i could find some interest in, most of them reminded me of something like murder she wrote and the others i felt were there for quirkiness. and im not reasearching that! any way i i tried yet again to find another two authors that i could do the research on but i honestly couldnt find anythone i was going to just pick two out of a hat and just research them but that was giving me a super bad negitive mood on what seemed to an exciting project so i thought its for the best to give it my all on the one author i felt intrested and had that spark for.

i chose cormac mcarthy for my author. i chose him because at the time of research i fell in love with his dark grittiness in his writing. and  also after reading a few pages on line i found it incredibly easy to read, thats surprising for a dyslexic lad. this just gave me more motivation to study this author even more, the first time that i can read somthing comfortably for a project.

im not going to bombared this page with photographs of my sketchbook pages of writing im going to post some of the fact and things that inspired me and that intrested me. (see sketch book 1 for research pages)

so here they are

thee basics. cormac mccarthy
                    july 20 1933
                    american born author

created 10 novels 2 short fictions 2 plays

the orchard keeper, outer dark, child of god, suttree, blood meridian, all the pretty horses, the crossing
cities of the plain, no country for old men, the road, the passenger (unpublished) the stone mason, the sunset limited, wake for susan, a drawing incident.

i took a hand full of these pieces and researched them thurther. the road, no contry of old men , child of god,

the road.

i read the book, i found it super repetitive and sometimes felt i was reading the same over and over, but i understand why, he was discribing each location, and has to because it set the scene of the cold dying world around them. its such a gripping story, but at the same time you can feel the love from a farther to his son. i was so inspired by the locations he had described.

a postapocalyptic theme based within a wasteland. a man, his wife and his son struggling to survive after an unexpected cataclysm killed most plants and animal life. only having 3 bullets, ready for suicide incase they're captured. the man uses one bullets on a intruder of there home. the wife states he has done this delibirtly to avoid her suicide. she eventuilly walks into the dark cold night with alomost no clothing. leaving the man to fend for his young son and him self. most population wiped out but the few that is left are currupt and hungry for food and survival. many people have now turned to canabilism in order to eat. not only does the man have to fight for his sons life but he also has to fight the earths conditions, the cold weather and other poeple.
the man and the boy stumble across an old mansion and its ocupied by people who eat other poeple to stop their hunger, but when the man and the boy enter the house there is noone home they come across a basment and in there are several dozen starving skinny unwell people, some that have been eaten all ready.

afer reading the road i felt super hyped about this author. i was eager to start drawing, so from this point i decided to research as i went along in my sketch book. i learnt from last year that doing all the research first and waiting for enough information to start meant that i lost the idea in my head there for the inspiration that i had whilst researching.

a few pags from my sketch book

in mccarthys books i have learnt that the books seem to be focused on the decisions of man, and the consequences that come with it. like a domino affect. Another strong theme seems to be how man makes those decisions when it seems that most of his choices have been taken away, for example in The Road - how the man looks after his child once his wife has made her own decision to take her life, and when the choice of a comfortable life has been taken away by nature.

child of god.

           1960s
           tennessee

a dispossessed, violent man attempts to exist outside the social order.
the book is a dark and twisted story of a young man who is obviusly mentaly handicapped, the local towns people hate him, hes know for his violence from a past event when his family home was to be sold and he was kicked out from it. the towns people try to blame him for other things such as rape murders and so forth none was true till later in the book. he tries to survive on is own in the cold winter woodlands, but his past and his mental state soon take tole on him. he finds dead bodys in a car crash and uses the body of a woman for personal/ relations. after he accedntly burns down the cabbin and his dead girlfreind  he was living in. he stumbles across a couple in a car and kills both of them and takes the womans body into the caves. hes soon cought after a shoot out on a farm were he was dressed in cloths of the dead woman and hatted with a the scalp of a young blond and is charged for the missing body's. a few local men known as the hunters take the man from hospital and they take him into the woods to get the bodys of the victims and find revenge.

child of god.I took this from the movie, lester ballard. dressed in the clothing of the woman he killed holding his winchester rifel, hatted with te scalp of a younge blond. plastered in makeup and blood on his hands.

i watched the film but it dosnt give you the same feel as the book. the book makes you feel sorry for the man and your rooting for him but in the film you begin to hate him and want him to get shot in the dick!

mcarthys work tends to always end up with a character on his own some how. in a location of survival.
alone in the desert for days on there own...surviving
in the cold woods...surviving
in a baren wast land...surviving.
or even abandoned houses, its very rare that its in a public place were there are strandered or lost or survivng or even fighting for there life.

location             characters             recurring
caves                lester                     winchester
woods              sherif                     coins

no country for old men.

currently still reading this book so research may be a little sketchy :)

the hit man discribed in the noval
in his 30s, bolt pistal. dressed as the 80s, eyes as blue as lapis, big stactured frame, dark complexion, a look of wealth.

  location             characters             recurring
drug site            hitman                  bag of money
  motel scene      sherif                     coin
  hotal                 lewelyn                  bolt gun
                                                       winchester rifel

a crappy illustration from a scene of no country for old men.
and a list my favourate locations from 3 of his books. no country for old men, child of god, the road.

like i say there is more research in my sketch book but iv only documented the parts that actually matter and the things that have reflected my sketch book developments
